To choose tones directly from the image, there is a tool called the Targeted Adjustment Tool (or TAT). Once you have it, move the cursor over the image. The crosshair is the actual cursor; the target with arrows above and below it is there as a hint. As you move over the image, the curve shows you the tones under the cursor; if you press and drag up and down on the image, you most affect tones like those just under the cursor. So if you press and drag vertically on a very light pixel, your image’s highlights will be adjusted, and so on. This will spoil you—luckily, there is a similar “on-image” editing ability with Photoshop’s Curves adjustment, too.

Note: Be sure to dismiss the TAT when done with it to prevent accidental adjustments. In Lightroom, click the Done button below the image window. In ACR, choose another tool (I prefer the Hand) to dismiss the TAT.
